Description

To my best friend, :iconvectorizedunicorn:VectorizedUnicorn

At this year's BronyCon, I managed to get my hands (hooves?) on another Andy Price headsketch, this time of a certain blue earth pony stallion with a certain someone in mind. (I did something similar at BABScon a few months ago, if y'all remember.) Naturally, I went ahead and scanned and digitized it in the only way I know how, and as best to keep to an art style similar to what's seen in the IDW comics. I still can't say for sure whether or not I can shade things using proper light logic, criticism on that front is greatly appreciated because I have no real idea on what's right or what it should look like...all I did was look at how other people shade ponies.

This time, I went and also digitized Andy's signature as well as the strokes that line the border that were originally in gel pen. I'm not actually sure if adding the signature is ethically sound or not, but since the original sketch is his, I felt I may as well add it, unless I'm told I should remove it. Other than that, I did the usual radial bar background thing that I did last time, which is also the only even-vaguely useful thing I know how to do as far as backgrounds.

But seriously, if you can critique the shading I'd appreciate it.

"Humdinger" is a title seen on Noteworthy's card in the Enterplay Collectible Card Game, probably attributing to his humming skill. The literary definition of the word has nothing to do with humming itself, but I feel it fits considering the recipient's standing as a friend and why they are so. It's also become an affectionate nickname between a couple other friends, too.

That being said, this pony's name is "Noteworthy" or less-commonly, "Blues".

you should make your shadows darker in value. the problem i see is the shadows are too similar in value to their base colors. right now they tend to shy away from attention, but in comparison the black shading under the neck stands out very much. appropriately dark shadows make the image "pop."

after researching color and value it changed my shading permanently.. a purpose of shading is to accentuate 3D form, and form is brought out through relative change in value. i don't know if you still wanted critique but i hope it is useful, it took me some time to figure out.
